Gummy Smile Botulinum Toxin Treatment (露齦笑/笑齦)

A smile is a beautiful thing, and signals the feeling of joy and connection. In some people, they may have the gummy smile which is a smile showing excessive amount of gum under the upper lip. Many Asians consider a gummy smile to be unsightly. Gummy smile can be reduced with botulinum toxin treatment. The procedure requires skill, and only highly experienced practitioners should perform it.

The target musles of botulinum toxin injection in correcting gummy smile are the upper lip elevators, such as the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, levator labii superioris, and zygomaticus minor. The botulinum toxin is injected deeply at the nasofacial groove which is usually approximately 1 cm lateral to the nasal ale.

Potential risks associated with the correction of “gummy smile” with botulinum toxin injection are upper lip ptosis, excessive lengthening of the philtrum, and drooping of the mouth corners.
